@Jon Quimbly, That's a good suggestion. I think I'll try to find a way to use my iPhone since it does video as well. The John Schneier link is a good one and I've read it before. I also sent it to a reporter who contacted me today from my local weekly paper.

Advice from a photographer who has been in similar circumstances:

Next time, bring a recent, inexpensive pocket camera with HD capability, a wide-angle lens (or adapter), a fully charged battery (and a spare), and the largest memory card that the camera will take.

Start it recording when you approach such a building, and sling it around your neck. Leave it recording, and let it capture your interactions with security personnel.

Then you'll have evidence that will get more attention.

Also, check the camera periodically to ensure its continuing to record. In my experience, better-than-average Nikon and Canon pocket cameras will keep recording til the battery runs dry. Cameras of this type usually have street prices under $300.

You might want to place a tiny bit of black gaffer or masking tape over any status lights that are visible from the front.

The sort of threatening behavior you received is typical around the country, particularly federal courthouses. I'd wager that they're all acting under the same orders, from on high.

It's ridiculous. Neither bombers nor gunman bother to photograph their targets beforehand. As Bruce Schneier said in his essay, The War on Photography, cops and security guards are acting out a movie plot, one that has no basis in reality.

We as citizens are giving up freedom and our rights for 'security'. The government is running with this premise that everything, and every law/bill or amount of freedoms they're restricting are for our safety, our security. The government cannot trust its nations citizens so long as the citizens do not trust the government.
